My practice allows me to make sense of my culture and my state of mind. It helps me examine the roots of my perspective and better understand the perspectives held by others. My work is inspired by my community.

BIO

Maria Campbell is a contemporary artist. She was voted Fusion Charlottetown's 2017 "Influencer of the Year." She is a voice, performance and visual artist. She has been praised for her "gorgeous soprano (voice), compelling stage presence and detailed dramatic skills..."[localxpress.ca, 2017] in Stan Rogers: A Matter of Heart at Neptune Theatre. Other theatre credits include Robyn Hood: This Tale's Even Fairlier [Confederation Centre of the Arts (CCOA)], Aladdin: Another Fairly Tall Tale (CCOA), Harvest Moon Rising (The Guild), Anne and Gilbert (Harbourfront Theatre/Victoria Playhouse), Abegweit: Soul of the Island (CCOA)

Maria graduated with a Master of Music in Performance from the University of Auckland where she was awarded First Class Honours and performed the role of Nancy in the UoA/Opera Factory production of Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring.  Maria has attended both the Accademia Europea Dell'Opera in Lucca, Italy, and the Canadian Operatic Arts Academy, and she hold an Artist Diploma from Western University in Ontario. Maria also sings soul and folk styles, and lays it down with  Motown band, The Motones.

Maria studied painting with Henry Purdy of Prince Edward Island, and art-making under Ontario architect and mixed media artist, Judy Bryant. Maria's work has been displayed in the Westland Gallery in London, Ontario and the Fine & Dandy Gallery in Toronto, as well as The Confederation Centre of the Arts, and The Gallery @ The Guild in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.  Maria curated the art and performance event, The Charlottetown SEXperience, which involved multi-disciplinary collaborators and aimed to generate dialogue about consent culture and sex positivity in Prince Edward Island and beyond.

She has served as a board member for arts organizations: The Guild, Ars Longa, and the Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts, and for the Prince Edward Island Rape and Sexual Assault Centre. She also works as a fitness trainer and movement director for various projects and clients.
